Safari Africa: Changing Perspectives
11/22/2008 - 5/30/2009
The world’s second largest continent, Africa, is as diverse
in its people and culture as it is vast in its size. Over 922 million
people and 20 native tribes reside in Africa. Since the 14th century
it has been attracting explorers, missionaries, emperors, hunters,
photographers, and tourists. Explorers Richard Burton, John H. Speke,
David Livingstone, and Henry M. Stanley were among the first to negotiate
the interior of the continent in the 19th century and eventually
set off the “Scramble for Africa” among European countries.
Except for Liberia and Ethiopia, by 1912 all of Africa was in European
control. The last of these occupied countries to achieve independence
did not do so until the 1990s.
It would be impossible for us to cover all the history and culture
of this fascinating land. Presented in this exhibit are three groups
of people that have traveled and inhabited Africa over the last 200
years: native tribes, game hunters, and tourists. Each of these groups
has seen Africa from their own perspective. We encourage you to explore
for yourselves this continent that is still a mystery to so many people.
