Cataloging the Collections

In August 2007, Kingman Museum received a grant from the Institute of Library and Science. The museum was one of 158 institutions to receive money for the 2007 Museums for America Grants. The grant allowed Kingman Museum to hire a part-time data entry person and a collection intern. In order to meet the grant guidelines and complete the cataloging with-in two years, volunteers, who are trained on handling the collection, assist with the cataloging project. Over 7,700 artifact records have been entered into our museum software, PastPerfect. Once this project is complete, the Collection Department will have full, intellectual control of the collection. Our collections enhance the exhibitions and educational programs.

If you are interested in volunteering for this project, or would like to know more information, please contact the collection department.

Relocation and Installation of Geology Exhibit

Kingman Museum received a grant from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists of $5,000 to pay for the planning and beginning stages of a new geology exhibition. Currently this exhibit is located in the planetarium room. The education department utilizes this area for programming space, making the geology exhibit inaccessible during those times. In order to serve our museum visitors' needs, the rocks and mineral specimens will be on display on the lower level along with the paleontology collection. Kingman Museum is working with Ray Wetzel Designs to install an exhibition that is both educational and interesting for the whole family.

Installation of "Cycle of Life" Exhibit

Using private donations, Kingman Museum will be renovating the south mezzanine wing. Currently on display is the museum's human and animal embryo collection. The new exhibit titled, "Cycle of Life," is the first exhibition planned for the new "Biological Science Hall" and will show the development of all animal life. The human embryos will be reinstalled with all new educational panels. The museum's animal circulatory and respiratory organ collection will also be on display. "Cycle of Life" will provide an educational experience for the whole family.

Brigham Archives

Kingman Museum will be receiving photos and papers on Edward Brigham, Sr., the museum's first director, on loan from his great-granddaughter, Jennifer Brigham, this summer. Edward Brigham, Sr. was the original "Indiana Jones," traveling the world collection artifacts and taking pictures. These important archival records have been passed down through his descendants to Jennifer Brigham. Kingman Museum plans to scan the photos and papers into a computer in order to preserve these valuable records. The museum will be working with Mary Butler of Heritage Battle Creek on a future temporary exhibit, "Where in the World is Edward Brigham?" This exhibit will run June 27, 2009 to October 17, 2009.
