Collection Re-housing Project
This summer Kingman Museum received a two-year grant from the Institute of Museums and Library Services for the purpose of re-housing part of its permanent collection. Grants funds purchased new shelving and storage materials (i.e. acid-free boxes and tissue paper). The grant also allowed the museum to hire a part-time collections assistant, Beth Yahne, and paid for a consultation from conservator, Barbra Moore. Barbara gave a training workshop on October 29. Staff and volunteers learned how to transport objects and create mounts to help stabilize them while in storage.
Beth, Katie Nelson, and volunteers began moving items out of the lower level storage room in November. Once the new shelving is installed, they will move items back inside.
Since additional space is needed to house the collections during the move, the temporary exhibition space has been converted into a storage area. The space will be closed to the public until November 2011. Please contact Beth Yahne at 965-5117 x13 or byahne@kingmanmuseum.org for more information about the project and volunteer opportunities. More pictures of the training and re-housing process are on Kingman's Facebook page.
Kingman Archives
Kingman Museum received a grant from the Nonprofit Alliance, Miller Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Binda Foundation to purchase digitization equipment, such as a flat-bed scanner, a part-time archivist, and pay for some archival materials. Archivist, Jon Kirkwood, organized and digitized the archives into five main groups: E.M. Brigham, Sr., E.M. Brigham, Jr., Kingman Museum of Natural History, Kingman Museum, Incorporated, and financials. Jon has also organized the photographic collection and is currently digitizing the glass slides.
Kingman Museum is looking for a volunteer to work in its archives beginning in February 2011, when Jon Kirkwood is leaving. Experience in archives or library science is desired. The volunteer will be entering archival information into our database, PastPerfect. Training will be provided with PastPerfect. Please contact Rose Goras for more information. |
