Tips for an Earth Friendly Thanksgiving Meal
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it can be a stressful
time for the planet. This year, why not be a little easier on the
planet with a few of these tips?
Eat
less meat! A lot of energy goes into the production of meat in
comparison to vegetables. Vegetarian diets provide numerous benefits
to the planet. However, Thanksgiving is about family so
you may need to compromise and only go all vegetarian with your
meal if you have the support of all attendees. Other options include
a smaller turkey and a vegetarian alternative or an organic, free-range
turkey, which has far less impact on the environment than a traditional
turkey.
- Go organic with most of your meal. Organic food
uses less energy and pesticides to produce. Plus, organic food
tends to be more flavorful!
- Go local! Check the farmers’ market for yummy
fresh produce grown in your area. Local food travels a shorter
distance, thus emitting less pollution into the air from travel.
- Buy items with minimal packaging, or recyclable
or reusable packaging. Less waste is always better for the environment!
