Don’t rake your leaves into the street!
Raking
leaves is a common fall activity, unfortunately, many of those leaves
end up in the streets. Most cities pick up leaves from the streets
at least one day during the fall. When leaves are raked into
the streets before that day they end up in the sewer system and excess
leaves clog the drains and waterways. Streets then end up flooded
after a heavy rain and city maintenance workers must spend extra time
unclogging the gutters. You should also remember that sewer overflow
often ends up in lakes and streams. Excess leaf debris can then
disrupt the ecosystem of our waterways reducing the amount of light
and oxygen available for plants and animals living in the water. Decomposing
leaves also increases phosphorus levels in the water causing algae
blooms. Please wait to rake leaves into the street until your
city picks them up or bag and dispose of leaves yourself.
