conservation tip of the month

June 2009

To me, summer means fresh food.  With such a large variety of produce in season during the summer, it’s easy to be green and you’ve got options!  First of all, I would recommend growing your own fruit, vegetables, and herbs.  If you don’t have a lot of space, try growing herbs in little pots on your window sills or a potted cherry tomato plant on your porch.  Growing your own food cuts green house gas emissions drastically, plus you’re not likely to use the large quantity of pesticides and fertilizers used by large farms.

Your second option is to buy locally grown food, which uses less packaging and less energy to transport.  A farmers’ market is a great place to shop for locally grown foods.  I know it’s hard to get all your food from a local source, but even a small change can make a big difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Food production accounts for 13% (7.8 tons) of the average U.S. family’s greenhouse gas emissions.
