April
2009
Catch
those April showers…
…your May flowers will thank you. A rain barrel collects rain
water that runs off your roof. This water can then be recycled for use
by your lawn or garden. Not only does this save you money on your water
bill, but it helps save the planet! Rain water hitting impermeable surfaces
such as your street or driveway collects sediment, oil, fertilizers, and other
pollutants before entering the storm water drain or reentering the environment. When
this polluted water enters the environment it can damage the natural balance
of the ecosystem resulting in algae blooms, fish kills, and more. Or
worse, it can pollute groundwater systems that are used for drinking water. Collecting
and using rain water is one more thing you can do to help our environment.
Rain barrels can be purchased at numerous home and garden stores or
you can make your own.
