March 2010
GROUNDWATER
AWARENESS WEEK is March 7-13, 2010
Groundwater is the water we all drink, so we need to keep it clean!
Groundwater
comes from rain and snow that soaks deep into the ground into aquifers
below the surface. Undesirable substances that have been dumped onto
the ground can also travel with the water into the aquifer. The
water we all use for drinking, cooking, bathing, and watering our
lawns and gardens is pumped out of the ground and into our homes
and businesses.
Here are 6 simple ways to help protect our groundwater:
- Dispose of household chemicals properly, preferably at the Household
Hazardous Waste Collection events in April, May, June or September.
- Never dump oil and fuels on the ground or down the drain.
- Repair any fuel tank leaks.
- Have septic tanks checked.
- Close abandoned wells.
- Don’t waste water
We drink groundwater…everyday. Be aware…and take care!
